US helps Mozambique improve business climate

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will grant Mozambique US$1.9 million to finance a programme to improve the business climate in the country, under an agreement signed Tuesday in Maputo.

Under the agreement, which guarantees funding for the programme over four years, the United States will support Mozambique in improving the business climate and public-private dialogue, policy and strategy development and technical support to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, institutional training for the competition authority and technical support for the implementation of contracts and programme and audit management.

About US$1.3 million of the total amount will be invested in improving the business climate, particularly financing of measures for political reforms and their dissemination, international exchange and studies and seminars, according to the statement from the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Around US$780,000 is earmarked for technical support of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, US$410,000 for Competition Authority staff training and US$328,000 will be earmarked for measures to reduce the time to resolve trade disputes in courts in the city and province of Maputo, as well as provide training on insolvency and matters of corporate law.
