Siemens is modernising 15 power transformers at the Cahora Bassa Dam in Mozambique.

The technology firm is undertaking the work for operator Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB), which has tasked it to upgrade transmission links built in the 1970s to transmit electrical power from the hydropower plant over a distance of 1,450 kilometres.

The deal is worth around €26 million (£23.7m) and the project is expected to take three years to complete.

It will involve maintenance and repair of the tap changer, replacing the bushings and installing new winding sets.

The transmission link has a capacity of 1,920MW and is crucial to maintain Mozambique’s position as one of the major electrical power exporters in the region, namely to South Africa.

Its operator says the retrofit is essential in order to enable the transformers to continue operating reliably.
