Customs officials from Mozambique and Zimbabwe are negotiating the possibility of opening the Machipanda border post between the two countries 24 hours a day as part of efforts to decongest the entry point.
According to state-controlled daily newspaper Noticias, Mozambique’s general customs director Halsimu Halah is quoted as saying the plan to open the border post throughout the day is expected to take effect anytime soon.
The paper said Halah made the announcement shortly after signing a memorandum of understanding with Happias Kuzvinzwa, a commissioner with the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority.
Halah said the customs authorities were now waiting for final approval of the move by their respective governments.
“Due to the intense movement of people and goods, the Manica provincial government are doing all they can to ensure that the project is set into motion,” he is quoted as saying.
Kuzvinzwa revealed that the two neighbours are also planning to open a new border post at Honde.
