Chinese technology corporation Huawei just launched the AfricaCom Conference in South Africa. The event, which is technically Africa’s largest telecoms fair, is seeing a third staging that will broadly highlight the growth of video services.
According to Huawei, the evolution of video is driving the demand for data services that have primary revenue generators for carriers across the globe. The IT-equipment manufacturer also covered the latest telco video ecosystems and design of video-based businesses, as well as network strategies.
David Chen, VP of Huawei Southern Africa Region insisted on the need to build robust systems to enhance user experience.
“The strategic window for the video business opportunity is now open for Telcos. If video traffic proportion is doubled from 30% to 60%, DOU (Data of Usage) increases 5 times. The key is to enhance the user experience. As Huawei, we foresee a four hundred-billion-dollar market globally in video services for carriers over the next five years. Huawei hopes to strengthen the ability of operators to enhance the user experience and is committed to enabling operator success through video and experience-based network construction,” noted Chen in his opening remarks.
What’s more, the forum highlighted the need for an extended partnership between key video industry players, particularly groups involved in providing OTT services.
The forum was also graced by African mobile service providers, as well as video equipment manufacturers such as Hisense.
It also emerged that countries such as Mauritius have managed to achieve 100% fibre coverage to households. The state’s primary carrier, Mauritius Telecom is also pushing for the right TV content positioning strategy that ought to be emulated by other African nations. In fact, Mauritius Telecom is working with Huawei to deploy 4K-ready IPTV platform in coming days.
