The Mozambican Grains Institute (ICM) is to build warehouses able to hold 300,000 tons of grain in the country’s border areas, the better to manage produce after harvesting and boost marketing, the company announced.

“The construction of the warehouses, initially in the provinces of Tete and Niassa, aims to boost agricultural marketing and agro-processing movement,” director general of ICM, Mahomed Valá, is quoted as saying.

The developments are expected to improve food security in rural areas, as they will store and conserve food as well as boosting agricultural capacity.

The warehouses will improve the country’s food storage capacity to more than one million tons, against the current 300,000, Valá notes.
