The Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Plant (HCB) has completed the replacement of the electricity supply line to southern Mozambique and South Africa, after the infrastructure was damaged by Cyclone Idai, the company announced on Tuesday.

HCB said in a statement that it had “successfully completed, on April 29, 2019, the replacement work for the HVDC [high-voltage, direct current] line, which transports energy to southern Mozambique and to South Africa.”
The conclusion of the operation means that “the full functioning of all HCB power transport lines” has been restored, it states.
The line had been damaged by the cyclone in the Dombe area in Manica province, in central Mozambique.
According to the Mozambican authorities, Cyclone Idai – which hit the country on 14 March – claimed 603 lives and forced tens of thousands of people from their homes, as well as destroying a great deal of private and public infrastructure.
