Nampula province plans to produce 73,000 tonnes of cashew nuts during the 2019/2020 agricultural campaign that begins in Mozambique, thereby maintaining its status as the largest national producer, said the provincial delegate of the National Cashew Institute on Sunday in the city of Nampula.
Júlio Langa also told the AIM news agency that the expected production exceeds the previous campaign by 3,000 tonnes, and that last year the province accounted for almost half of the country’s production of that cash crop, which totalled 142,000 tonnes.
Cashew cultivation was introduced in Mozambique in the 20th century in the then districts of Nampula, Gaza and Inhambane, as they were found to offer appropriate conditions for its cultivation, so there is still a high density of cashew trees in these regions.
During the 2018/2019 cashew nut marketing year, which began on October 2018 and ended on February 2019, Nampula province produced 70,069 tonnes which were sold at an average price of 43.15 meticais (about 61 US cents) per kilogramme.
