Nestlé’s Nespresso brand has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique to promote the local coffee industry.
Gorongosa National Park is located in Central Mozambique, spread over a land space of 400,000ha.
The initiative is part of Nespresso’s Reviving Origins programme, created to restore high-quality coffee production in regions worldwide.
Nespresso CEO Jean-Marc Duvoisin said: “Nespresso is very proud to start this collaboration with the Gorongosa Project to revive the coffee production in Mozambique.
“We will work directly with coffee farmers to help establish a high-quality coffee supply that will increase economic opportunities in this region while giving our consumers a unique coffee experience.”
Under the MoU, Nespresso will implement its AAA Sustainable Quality Program and help the coffee farmers in the region improve the quality of their coffee, as well as encourage farmers to adopt sustainable farming practices and agroforestry.
The programme will also focus on improving the livelihoods of the coffee farmers through capacity and skills building.
Gorongosa National Park representative Matthew Jordan said: “The collaboration with Nespresso will help the Gorongosa Coffee programme achieve its ambition to dedicate 1,000h to high-quality shade-grown Arabica coffee, translating into over 5,000 hectares of protected and restored rainforest and sustainable livelihoods for over 2,500 families.”
Nespresso intends to launch the coffee from Mozambique in 2022 as a limited edition product.
Additionally, Nespresso, through its Reviving Origins programme, is investing CHF10m ($10.1m) through a five-year plan (2017-2021) to revive the coffee industries in selected countries.
