Mozambicans and foreigners who visit Pemba and stay in any tourist establishment in the capital of the province of Cabo Delgado are subject, from next April, to payment of a tax imposed by the Municipal Council of the city, the city’s mayor said.

Florete Simba said that the tax works as a contribution to the supply of some basic services that are provided by the local authority and said that it will be paid when the guest is leaving the hotel, and its price will vary based on the category of the establishment.

Thus, anyone who stays in a 4- to 5-star hotel will pay 300 Meticais (about US$5), while the price for a 3-star hotel is 150 meticais (each dollar is worth 65.4 meticais) and a bed and breakfast will charge 50 meticais, Simba said, quoted by daily newspaper Notícias.

The tax, which was adopted during the session of the Municipal Assembly held in November 2019, was introduced to fund some basic municipal services, including the repair of squares, access roads, and urban cleaning, among others.

Cabo Delgado province, particularly in the cities of Pemba and Palma, will be the centre of the exploration activity for large reserves of natural gas discovered in two offshore blocks – Area 1 and Area 4 – that are operated by ExxonMobil and INE (Area 1) and the Total group (Area 4).
