The government of Cuando Cubango Thursday suspended, for an indefinite period, the transportation of wood throughout the province, to prevent this material from leaving without going through the custom warehouse created for this purpose.
The measure comes as a result of consultation meetings held between the governor of Cuando Cubango, Júlio Bessa, and representatives of the National Association of Woodworkers of Angola (ANIMA).
In order to escape from the authorities, timber transporters in the region have been opting for clandestine (chopped) roads and overnight transportation.
In an order to which Angop had access today, the government of Cuando Cubango confirms that, in recent weeks, there has been “an intense movement in the roads and inter-municipal roads, especially at night”.
In case of violation of the suspension, the document continues, the government instructs police and similar bodies to forward the goods to the warehouse for timely verification by the existing Multisectoral Commission.
In November 2019, the government of Cuando Cubango had already banned logging, due to the chaotic and uncontrolled state of this activity in the region.
