South Africa’s government and employees of the national carrier are considering business models that may result in its transition into a new airline.
South African Airways workers signed an accord with the government that envisions a new approach to how an airline would be run, according to a statement emailed Friday by the Department of Public Enterprises.
“A new and bold approach is required if there is to be any chance that South Africa can retain vital airlift capacity and trade connections, through a strategic national asset, with both public and private sector participation, which is internationally competitive, viable, sustainable and profitable,” it said.
The creation of a new airline with the correct corporate structure will allow for “the new SAA” to compete in the post Covid-19 world, it said.
