Mozambique: DPWorld welcomed the largest vessel ever to call at the Port of Maputo

Last Wednesday April 29, DP World Maputo welcomed the Maersk Santa Catarina, the largest vessel to ever to call the Port of Maputo. The visit also broke another record, for the highest TEU per single vessel interchange of 3’310.

Built in 2011 by Daewoo shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and operated by Maersk shipping Line, the Santa Catarina is 300m long and has a container capacity of 7100 TEU.

The DP World container terminal in the Port of Maputo which is almost entirely focused on origin & destination throughput, became a world-class gateway to Mozambique and Southern Africa serving as the main shipping terminal for land-locked regions such as Gauteng Province, Eswatini, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Malawi.

The terminal throughput has been growing exponentially, with 2019 volumes rising by 53% compared to the previous year, as more and more hinterland exporters/importers are benefitting from the excellent supply chain solution via the Maputo corridor. DP World Maputo has the concession to manage, develop and operate the Maputo container terminal until 2043.

The passage of the Santa Catarina through the DP World Maputo terminal is yet another statement to the fact that the Port of Maputo is reassuring its position as a leading strategic logistic hub to the region.
