Air Botswana will resume domestic flights from June 12 after suspending them for two months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Thulagano Segokgo told a media briefing on May 26 that the national airline was not making profit because movement was suspended due to the lockdown, which was imposed to curb the spread of COVID-19.

He said the airline would adhere to all COVID-19 protocols as set by the World Health Organisation as well as domestic regulations emanating from the country’s response to the pandemic.

He said flights would mainly be from Gaborone to Maun and Francistown and Kasane while international flights would remain suspended as borders were still closed for passenger movement.

Quizzed on whether the national carrier would adhere to the stipulated number of passengers allowed on public transport, Mr Segokgo said it was their mandate to ensure that all operators followed stipulated protocols to the letter.

Regarding Botswana Railways (BR) operations, the minister said freight services would continue while the passenger train would remain suspended.

He said continuous suspension of passenger services was due to low movement. He added that BR management decided to halt operations to avoid losses.
