The Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Mozambique has mobilised about €170M (around US$190M) to fund the response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, according to a statement released by the delegation.

The amount is expected to mitigate the socioeconomic effects of the pandemic through the support to the health system, education and development sector as well as fighting disinformation and fake news about COVID-19 in the country, said the statement.

The fund, part of the EU’s “Team Europe” action to facilitate the national response in partner countries, combines resources of the European Union, member states and European financial institutions, including the European Investment Bank.

“The mobilisation of the funds is an answer to the National Prevention Plan for the fight against COVID-19 adopted by the Mozambican government,” read the statement.

In addition to the “Team Europe” approach, the EU and the member states provide assistance to the Mozambican authorities through pre-existing consultation mechanisms.
