The Africa office in Rwanda will support governments in their efforts to build health systems by aligning funding with the priorities of the government of the countries in which they work.

Rwanda has signed an agreement with the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, a charitable not-for-profit organisation focused on promoting the health of women and girls throughout the world.

Foreign Affairs Minister Vincent Biruta signed a host country agreement between the government of Rwanda and the Susan Thompson Buffet Foundation represented by Professor Senait Fisseha.

Rwanda will host the Africa headquarters of the Foundation.

Susan Thompson Buffett was an American activist for the causes of civil rights, abortion rights and birth control, and the first wife of investor Warren Buffett.

She was a director of Berkshire Hathaway, owning 2.2% of the company at the time of her death, and was the 153rd richest person in the world.

“I am looking forward to working together for a stainable solution and lasting societal changes focusing on women and girls and anchored on local ownership, expertise, human development, and south-south cooperation for a self-sufficient Africa,” Fisseha said.

The Africa office in Rwanda will support governments in their efforts to build health systems by aligning funding with the priorities of the government of the countries in which they work.

Rwanda is one of the countries where the foundation is pursuing this work in close coordination with the Office of the President and the Ministry of Health.

Another priority is to increase investment in local organisations. Throughout the foundation’s strategy, specific opportunities will be identified to increase the support of local organisations and institutions.

Meanwhile, the Foundation will build the next generation of global south champions for the health of women and girls.

This focus reflects the belief that these priorities are the most likely to drive lasting change in their communities and countries.
