In a historic day for Mozambique’s men’s football, as its U20 (players up to 20 years of age) National football team beat Namibia 1-0 in the COSAFA Championship final, at the Nelson Mandela Bay in South Africa, to secure a historic first regional title in the sport.
The title is Mozambique’s first regional title in football, the most popular sport in the African continent. This was also the first time Namibia reached a U20 final, meaning that whichever side won the title, it would certainly be a historic achievement by itself.
The win, secured by midlfielder Dercio Augusto’s goal in the match’s 31st minute, bodes well for the future of football in Mozambique, since many of the players crowned champions today will one day represent the main Mozambican National team.
A regional title is sure to catch the attention of football scouts all over the world, opening doors that otherwise would not be considered viable until now, such as the competitive European market, which has traditionally projected quite a few highly successful African players to global fame for decades.
