Mozambique’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Max Tonela, said today that the restoration of security conditions in Cabo Delgado is crucial for the recovery of investors in the natural gas area in Palma.
The minister added that the development of the situation will determine when and how work should be resumed.
With the threat of terrorism in the province of Cabo Delgado, investors operating in gas projects ended up paralyzing their activities, fearing they would be harmed by the insurgents. About this, Max Tonela stated that:
“We are hopeful that the recent performance of the Defense and Security Forces continues so that the recovery takes place beyond Mocímboa da Praia and all the affected districts, ensuring the population’s return to their normal activity. Under these conditions, the projects’ stakeholders will be in a position to take over”.
Speaking about french oil firm TotalEnergies, the minister stated that he has been in permanent contact with the company. According to the minister, all other project partners maintain their objective of investing in Mozambique.
“We will follow the upcoming developments on this matter and we will be able to discuss issues of how and when work will be resumed”, added Max Tonela, indicating that the resumption of gas projects depends on the restoration of tranquility in Cabo Delgado province.
