A national electric vehicle promotion drive has been launched as officials plan to create a carbon emission-free transport system.
The Ministry of Transport and Logistics launched the campaign in Addis Ababa with a month-long free EV transport service free of charge in collaboration with Green Tech Ethiopia, one of a few private companies in the country’s EV market.

The transport service, which started on Wednesday, involves 40 charging stations and 60 electric vehicles that can be driven at least 200 kilometers once charged with only 20 Birr.
Transport Minister Dagmawit Moges said the government is working to replace the growing fuel-consuming transportation service options with environmentally friendly electric vehicles.
The government encourages the use of EVs to help reduce pollution caused by transportation services through the introduction of renewable energy transport services.
“We will integrate our huge renewable energy resources with the growing demand for EV technologies to realize our vision to create a carbon emission-free transport and logistic system,” the minister said.

The Transport Ministry has been taking various initiatives and collaborations with concerned bodies to promote alternate transportation services like bicycles.
It also plans to introduce 4,800 electric buses and 148,000 electric automobiles in its ten years strategic plan.
