Japan last week announced a new humanitarian assistance package worth about $25 million to support Ethiopia through its partnerships with various international organizations.

The humanitarian package for the Japanese Fiscal Year 2022/2023 will support the work of a dozen of UN agencies and ICRC, focusing on five areas, according to Japan Embassy in Addis Ababa

The focus areas are food security and livelihood; protection and emergency assistance; sexual and reproductive health and GBV; mine action; and human rights.

Japan will provide the highest fund to the World Food Program (WFP). The WFP will get nearly $4 million to provide nutritional treatment to children aged 6-59 months and pregnant women in Afar, Amhara, and Tigray Regions.

The embassy said Tokyo will also provide $15 million to six agencies offering protection and emergency assistance to IDPs, refugees, returnees, and host communities.

It said Japan will also provide $300,000 to the UN human rights agency OHCHR “to promote and protect human rights, especially in conflict-affected areas”.
