Besides being a wildlife destination, East Africa has recently gained a reputation for having some of the best beaches on the continent.

These beaches are more than just a paradise of turquoise waters and white sands. They are a perfect place to relax your mind after visiting national parks like Serengeti or hiking a mountain like Mount Kenya.

The beaches of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda range from remote islands and historical ruins to tropical shores and bustling towns.

These beaches provide tourists with unforgettable memories of scuba diving, big game fishing and snorkelling.

Here, we will discuss some of the best beaches in East Africa where you can visit and spend time with your family or friends when on vacation.

1. Kendwa Beach – Tanzania

Kendwa beach.

Kendwa beach lies on the northwestern coastline of Unguja. It is one of the liveliest beaches in Africa, where you can enjoy quality nightlife.

As a tourist, there are plenty of activities to choose in this beach, ranging from scuba diving and snorkelling to explore some of the fantastic coral reefs.

Kendwa is gorgeously sun-kissed and has plenty of bars, hotels and restaurants. Eating dinner while watching the sunset over the ocean is one of the most beautiful moments you’ll experience at Kendwa.

2. Diani Beach – Kenya

Diani, an amazing long stretch of beach, is undoubtedly one of the best beaches in East Africa. It is located in Coastal Kenya and is easily accessible from Mombasa.

Diani beach is a perfect destination for snorkelling, surfing, swimming, and even relaxing, boasting white sands and a coral reef with thriving marine life.

The beach has plenty of amenities and infrastructure, such as great bars, renowned restaurants and beachfront resorts.

3. Bofa Beach – Kenya

Although beaches in Kilifi may not be spectacular, Bofa is unique on its way. It is a broad slash of white sand, with swaying palms and rolling Indian Ocean surf.

It is actually the best destination for budget travellers who want to enjoy beach life.

Bofa beach stretches from Baobab Sea Lodge to Kilifi Beach, past Vidazini Beach. It is ideal for quiet walks and relaxation.

Many restaurants and resorts have clean amenities, making it one of the best beaches in East Africa.

4. Lido Beach – Uganda

Lido, one of the best beaches in East Africa, is located approximately one kilometre from Entebbe International Airport.

It is a favourite for the locals, but visitors are also welcome. Lido beach is fairly busy during the weekends as it is famous for holding events ranging from family events to wild parties.

The best months to visit Lido beach are January, February, March and April since it is less crowded and the temperatures are warm.

Unfortunately, you can’t swim in at Lido due to the risk of bilharzia. The white sandy beach is a perfect place to enjoy beautiful sunsets.

5. Nakupenda Beach – Tanzania

Nakupenda (which means I love you in Swahili) is one of the best beaches in East Africa. Visiting the beach gives you the feeling of being on a paradise island.

It is a spectacular place to go for snorkelling, to swim and to relax on the white sands. Watching the sun go down on one of the bars at Nakupenda is, without a doubt, the perfect way to end your day.
