Mozambique natural gas production fell by around four million gigajoules from 192 million gigajoules in 2018 to just 188 million in 2021, according to a study carried out by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) and cited by the newspaper ‘O País’.
According to the INE, although the country is “famous” for its huge deposits of natural gas, recent years have been marked by a reduction in the amount of natural gas produced and sold. The trend should be reversed by the start of the exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the floating platform operating off the Cabo Delgado coast.

Apart from the drop in production, the INE document reveals that there was also a reduction in gas exports. “During the aforementioned period, the country recorded a reduction of around nine million gigajoules of exported gas, from 159 to 150 million gigajoules between 2018 and 2021,” the report details.
However, the study shows that there was an increase in domestic consumption of gas between 2018 and 2021, “with the amount of gas sold in the national market rising from 23 million gigajoules in 2018 to 29.3 million in 2021”.

Natural gas is a non-renewable fossil fuel derived from the degradation, under ideal pressure and temperature conditions, of organic matter over thousands of years .
