Ethiopian Airlines has inaugurated its five-times-a-week flights to Copenhagen, Denmark, from its hub in Addis Ababa.

“Copenhagen has joined our global network as the 21st destination in Europe,” Ethiopian airlines announced on Sunday.

Ethiopian, which resumed the flight after two decades of interruption, further states that the flight service to Denmark’s capital is “a crucial gateway for our airline in northern Europe and southern Scandinavia.”

The Carrier first started serving Copenhagen in November 1999 but the flight was suspended about four years later.

Increasing demand to connect the city with Africa has finally led to the resumption of direct flight.

In a joint announcement on the flight in January, Copenhagen Airport’s CEO Thomas Woldbye said it has for a long time been “our desire to improve the connection between Copenhagen and Africa.”

“The airport in Addis Ababa have grown to become one of Africa’s most important HUBs, with onward connections to more than 60 different cities in Africa,” he said.

“Thus this new route will be an amazing gateway to the whole continent for Copenhagen.”

The new flight is scheduled five times a week except on Tuesdays and Sundays, and is operated by Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner with 315 seat arrangement.

Besides the passenger flight, the airlines launched a weekly freighter service from Copenhagen in March, deploying B767-300F aircraft which has a capacity of 45 tonnes of cargo per flight.

The route is expected to create new opportunities for Danish businesses, especially the pharma industry, thanks to the state-of-the-art facilities and pharma wing of Ethiopian Cargo and Logistics Services.

Currently, Ethiopian Airlines is serving more than 145 international passenger and cargo destinations.
