Shortly after meeting with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani during his state visit to China on July 28, Chinese President Xi Jinping granted a debt relief package to the Mauritanian government amounting to $21 million.
This decision follows an agreement signed between the two countries to expand cooperation in various fields under the Belt and Road Initiative – a multinational infrastructure program aimed at establishing global trade routes.
Over the years China has assisted Mauritania in building roads, bridges, hospitals and other strategic projects through this initiative.
The Chinese President stated that his country is ready to work with Mauritania to elevate bilateral cooperation to higher levels. This decision further strengthens the existing cooperation between the two countries.
