Senegal’s state-owned electricity agency SENELEC is on track to launch its national digitalization network by December 2023. The utility partnered with Chinese tech giant Huawei to develop several telecommunications projects in December 2022.
The two companies have been working together for a year, and in September, they presented a progress report to share updates on their ongoing projects. One of the key achievements of this partnership is the establishment of a cutting-edge national network using Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing technology.

This network, with a capacity of 100/200G, is nearing completion and is set to enhance communication and data transmission capabilities across the country. The network leverages SENELEC’s existing optical fiber infrastructure, which spans more than 2,000 km across Senegal.
Additionally, a secure optical fiber radio network has been developed to facilitate critical communications for SENELEC and public services. The project includes the automation of the electrical network and the implementation of smart energy metering.

The collaboration contributes to Senegal’s technological advancement and economic growth and aligns with the vision of the Emerging Senegal Plan to make Senegal a digital hub. Ultimately, this project is expected to extend service coverage to remote areas, which can be beneficial for companies in the mining and energy sectors, where network coverage is essential.
