Mozambique’s Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF) has received approximately US$ 114M this year, stemming from revenues generated by the country’s natural gas exploration activities.

This substantial amount reflects two collection periods: US$74.1M  from revenues collected in 2023. And US$39.8M from the first half of this year.

Furthermore, the Bank of Mozambique manages these funds through a transitional account that acts as a reserve to accumulate wealth from natural resource. Particularly natural gas.

The SWF’s transitional account plays a crucial role in managing Mozambique’s natural gas revenues sustainably. It receives funds from various sources, including petroleum production taxes, corporate income taxes, capital gains, production bonuses, and production-sharing agreements. These accumulated revenues strengthen the country’s financial reserves, promoting long-term economic stability and growth.

Since starting LNG exports from the Rovuma Basin, Mozambique has completed 71 shipments, totalling 5.7 million tonnes. Starting in November 2022, these exports have positioned Mozambique as a credible alternative in diversifying the global natural gas supply.

The Mozambican government reports strong market demand for its LNG, reinforcing the country’s strategic role in global energy.

Projections suggest that Mozambique’s natural gas exports could transform the economy, highlighting the potential for a significant long-term impact. The Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF) is central to the country’s broader strategy of managing its natural wealth prudently and transparently, ensuring that revenues support sustainable national development.

The legislation governing the SWF requires the integration of revenues from the transitional account into the State’s internal revenue system. Funds must be transferred exclusively to the Single Treasury Account and the Sovereign Wealth Fund Account, ensuring stringent oversight and accountability. This legal framework safeguards the effective use of Mozambique’s natural resource revenues, reflecting the country’s commitment to responsible resource management.

Overall, the SWF reflects Mozambique’s strategic approach to managing its expanding natural gas sector. By directing revenues into a well-regulated fund, the country aims to build financial resilience, support economic diversification, and secure a prosperous future for its citizens.
