Ethiopian Fintech, Kifiya, a leading AI-powered, data-driven company in embedded finance and AgTech, has won the prestigious Silver Award for Product Innovation of the Year in Africa at the 2024 Global SME Finance Awards. The award, organised by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the SME Finance Forum, recognises Kifiya’s groundbreaking efforts to expand financial inclusion and support SMEs in Sub-Saharan Africa.

As the first Ethiopian company to win this award, Kifiya’s success highlights its commitment to leveraging AI and technology to bridge the credit and market access gap for businesses in the region.

Kifiya’s innovative solutions have played a vital role in empowering Africa’s SMEs, which represent 90% of businesses and contribute 60% of employment. In Ethiopia, where 50% of adults remain unbanked, Kifiya’s digital platforms have created pathways for thousands of SMEs to access credit and financial services, leading to significant economic growth and stability. The company’s efforts have enabled close to 300,000 MSMEs to access over $100 million in uncollateralized credit, demonstrating the impact of its AI-powered infrastructure.

In addition to providing credit access, Kifiya’s embedded finance technology helps banks extend and manage uncollateralized digital credit, while offering Sharia-compliant financial products. The company’s AgTech platform also supports over 1.5 million smallholder farmers with credit, market access, and microinsurance to protect against climate risks. These initiatives have boosted productivity and contributed to the overall well-being of low-income communities.

Looking ahead, Kifiya is focused on scaling its solutions across Africa, addressing a $400 billion credit gap for MSMEs and smallholder farmers. As Africa’s population and economy continue to grow, Kifiya’s AI-powered innovations will play a pivotal role in transforming the digital financial services landscape and driving inclusive economic growth throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.
