Senegal has launched Sub-Saharan Africa’s first all-electric Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network in Dakar. This groundbreaking project was inaugurated in late 2023 and marks a significant leap forward in sustainable urban transportation for the region.
The Dakar BRT system spans 18.3 kilometers and connects 23 stations across some of the most densely populated areas of the capital, aimed at easing traffic congestion and cutting travel times in half—from 90 minutes to just 45 minutes between the suburbs and the city centre.
The BRT network is powered entirely by a fleet of 121 electric buses, which are not only eco-friendly but also designed to transport approximately 300,000 passengers daily. This development is part of Senegal’s broader strategy to modernise its public transport infrastructure and align with global environmental goals by reducing carbon emissions and promoting green energy solutions.

The project also represents a significant investment in Dakar’s urban mobility, combining both public and private sector efforts under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
This initiative reflects the growing focus across Africa on sustainable transport options, as countries seek innovative solutions to urban mobility challenges.
Senegal’s BRT system is seen as a model for other African cities, demonstrating how the integration of electric vehicles into public transport can reduce pollution, enhance accessibility, and improve the quality of urban life.
