Petrobras, Brazil’s state-owned oil giant, is significantly expanding its operations across Africa, taking advantage of new opportunities in the continent’s oil and gas sector.

At the upcoming African Energy Week (AEW) 2024 in Cape Town, the company will lead a delegation of Brazilian energy leaders and stakeholders to discuss potential collaborations and partnerships. This move follows Petrobras’ recent strategic acquisitions in African territories, including a 10% stake in the offshore Deep Western Orange Basin in South Africa, a region known for its promising deepwater oil reserves.

In Namibia, Petrobras has shown further ambition by bidding for a 40% stake in the Mopane exploration block, an area with substantial reserves estimated at up to 10 billion barrels of recoverable oil. If successful, this acquisition would position Petrobras as a key player in Namibia’s expanding energy market, which has become a hotspot for major offshore discoveries. This investment aligns with Petrobras’ broader international growth strategy, which aims to leverage the geological similarities between Brazil and Africa’s frontier markets to drive new projects.

Petrobras’ recent activities also extend to São Tomé and Príncipe, where the company acquired interests in three Shell-operated blocks in late 2023. These moves form part of a $1.3 billion investment strategy focused on expanding Petrobras’ global footprint in frontier markets over the next five years.

At AEW 2024, Petrobras will explore further opportunities in other promising African regions, including Angola and the Namibe Basin, as the company seeks to tap into Africa’s rich ultra-deepwater reserves, mirroring its successful operations in Brazil.

With the African Energy Week 2024 serving as a central platform, Petrobras is set to engage in discussions on frontier exploration and technology-driven solutions for sustainable development in the oil and gas sector.
