The Speaker of Angola’s National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, emphasised the importance of gender equality at the G20 Parliamentary Forum in Brasilia, stating that it is vital for equal opportunities, rights, and responsibilities.
Speaking under the theme “Women in Power: Expanding Female Representation in Decision-Making Spaces,” Cerqueira highlighted the barriers faced by African women and girls, particularly in rural areas where cultural and traditional practices often limit access to education and vocational training. She noted that overcoming these obstacles is essential to fostering empowered future generations.
Cerqueira proposed measures to enhance women’s participation in leadership, encouraging women to inspire others to pursue their aspirations. She cited Angola as a positive example, with a female representation of 39.5% in parliament, ranking 25th worldwide. As Angola’s first female Speaker, Cerqueira sees her role as part of the country’s progress in creating a balanced, resilient society. She highlighted Angola’s introduction of a gender-sensitive budget as a commitment to inclusivity in public finances, promoting resource allocation that meets diverse needs.
