Zimbabwe and Russia have solidified their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties during the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation.
The three-day ministerial session, concluded on November 7, 2024, in Russia, culminated in the signing of official protocols endorsing the agreements reached. These accords reaffirm the collaborative framework established during Zimbabwean President Dr. Emmerson Mnangagwa’s visit to Russia in January 2019, setting the stage for deeper partnerships across key sectors.
Dr. Amon Murwira, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, highlighted the importance of the agreements, emphasising transparency and responsible execution to ensure mutual success. “Our ongoing collaboration exemplifies the shared goals and aspirations of both nations,” Dr. Murwira stated. The protocols provide a structured approach to achieving the objectives outlined, mitigating misunderstandings and fostering seamless cooperation between the two nations.

A key highlight of the session was Zimbabwe’s engagement with Russian truck manufacturer KAMAZ, a global leader in heavy-duty vehicle production. Dr. Murwira’s discussions with KAMAZ focused on expanding the company’s footprint in Africa and creating local job opportunities through partnerships in Zimbabwe. This initiative aligns with Zimbabwe’s broader strategy to enhance industrial capacity and generate employment by integrating global expertise into its domestic economy.
KAMAZ, known for its diverse product range, including over 60 truck models, trailers, buses, and engines, presents a promising avenue for Zimbabwe to strengthen its industrial sector. The collaboration could pave the way for technology transfer, skill development, and the establishment of manufacturing or assembly facilities in Zimbabwe. This partnership highlights the tangible benefits of Zimbabwe’s strengthened ties with Russia, fostering economic growth and industrialisation.
