Ethiopia has unveiled an ambitious strategy to expand electric vehicle (EV) adoption nationwide, aiming to replace approximately 1.5 million fossil fuel-powered vehicles with EVs.

Government officials outlined a range of initiatives to support this transition, emphasising efforts to promote sustainable urban mobility and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The capital, Addis Ababa, and the northern city of Gondar are already using EVs for public transportation, setting an example for other cities to follow.

Key infrastructure developments are underway to support this transition. Charging stations are being installed in cities like Dire Dawa, Harar, and Jigjiga in eastern Ethiopia, facilitating the expansion of EV usage. According to Bareo Hassen, Ethiopia’s state minister of transport and logistics, the country has already operationalized more than 100,000 EVs in the past two and a half years. The government’s target includes replacing 432,000 fossil fuel-powered vehicles with EVs within the next decade.

To further accelerate this shift, Ethiopia is implementing policies to encourage private investment in EV production and related services. These include offering incentives such as free or leased land for after-sales service facilities and supporting the establishment of public charging infrastructure. In a bold move to align with its green transition goals, the government has announced a ban on imports of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable mobility.

Ethiopia’s push for electric mobility reflects its broader strategy for environmental sustainability and energy independence. By promoting EV adoption and fostering local production capabilities, the government aims to position the country as a leader in Africa’s green transition.

These efforts not only contribute to reducing the environmental impact of transportation but also create opportunities for innovation and economic growth in the renewable energy and automotive sectors.
