Kenya and Angola have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, with plans to revive direct flights between Nairobi and Luanda by Kenya Airways.

This significant development was announced after high-level talks between Kenyan President William Ruto and Angolan President João Lourenço in Luanda. The restoration of direct flights is expected to boost trade, tourism, and connectivity between the two nations. Additionally, Angola has agreed to reciprocate Kenya’s visa-free policy for Angolan citizens, making travel easier for Kenyan professionals, particularly teachers, to Angola.

The leaders also discussed pressing regional matters, including ongoing peace efforts in the Great Lakes region under the Luanda Process, aimed at stabilizing the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Both Presidents emphasized the need for a collaborative approach involving the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC) to consolidate peace initiatives. “Peace and security in our continent are paramount,” President Ruto stated, highlighting the importance of a unified and inclusive strategy for long-term stability.

President Ruto extended an invitation to President Lourenço to participate in a retreat in Kenya later this month, which will serve as a precursor to the AU Heads of State Summit in February. Ruto also sought Lourenço’s support for the candidacy of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga as Chairperson of the African Union Commission, reflecting Kenya’s proactive role in shaping continental leadership and reforming the African Union.

The resumption of direct flights between Nairobi and Luanda is expected to enhance Kenya Airways’ role in connecting Africa to global markets. The airline, a key driver of economic growth, will not only improve passenger traffic but also facilitate the transportation of goods, strengthening trade ties between the two nations.

The renewed focus on aviation, visa liberalisation, and regional peace reflects the commitment of Kenya and Angola to fostering a more integrated and prosperous Africa.
