Rhino Resources has confirmed a hydrocarbons discovery at the Sagittarius 1-X exploration well in Namibia’s Orange Basin, marking another significant milestone for the country’s growing upstream sector.

The company announced the find in a statement on Monday, highlighting the potential of Block 2914A (PEL 85), where the well is located.

Exploration Progress and Key Findings

The Sagittarius 1-X well was spud on 18 December 2024, and drilling operations have now concluded. Rhino Resources successfully conducted wireline logging, allowing it to collect hydrocarbon samples and sidewall cores for further analysis.

The discovery reinforces Namibia’s emerging status as a major hydrocarbons frontier following a series of recent finds in the Orange Basin. This region has attracted significant industry attention, with major international operators investing in offshore exploration and development.

Namibia’s Orange Basin: A High-Potential Hydrocarbons Frontier

Spanning 160,000 square kilometres, Namibia’s Orange Basin is regarded as one of the most promising hydrocarbon exploration regions globally. Despite its immense potential, recent drilling activities have yielded mixed results. Shell and Chevron, two major international oil companies, reported in January 2025 that their exploration campaigns in the basin did not return commercially viable hydrocarbons.

However, Rhino Resources’ recent discovery at Sagittarius 1-X injects fresh optimism into the sector. Should further evaluations confirm economic feasibility, Namibia could witness increased foreign investment, infrastructure development, and energy security enhancements.

The Future of Namibia’s Oil and Gas Industry

With drilling ongoing at Capricornus 1-X, the industry eagerly awaits results that could further define Namibia’s offshore potential. If additional discoveries confirm commercial reserves, the Orange Basin could attract increased exploration and development activity, positioning Namibia as a key player in Africa’s emerging energy landscape.

Stay tuned for further updates on Namibia’s hydrocarbon discoveries and investment opportunities in the Orange Basin.
