Brazil is deepening energy cooperation with African nations, leveraging its technical expertise and investment capacity to support regional energy development.
As a key G20 member, Brazil’s engagement in Africa’s energy sector is growing through strategic investments, knowledge exchange, and partnerships, with the African Energy Week (AEW) 2025 set to play a pivotal role in advancing these collaborations.
Brazil’s Expanding Presence in Africa’s Oil and Gas Sector
At the recent “Invest in African Energies” reception in Rio de Janeiro, hosted by the African Energy Chamber (AEC), major Brazilian energy firms, including Petrobras and independent oil producers, reaffirmed their commitment to investing in Africa’s oil and gas sector.
• Petrobras, Brazil’s state-owned oil giant, is pursuing a 40% stake acquisition in Namibia’s Mopane oil and gas exploration block, bringing its deepwater exploration expertise to the continent.

• Independent Brazilian oil producers—including PRIO, 3R Petroleum, Enauta, and PetroRecôncavo—have successfully revitalised mature oil fields and are now exploring opportunities in Namibia, Angola, and the Republic of Congo.
• The Namibia Energy Corporation (NEC) is working to increase Brazilian investments in upstream exploration and infrastructure across Africa.
Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development
Beyond oil and gas, Brazil is also sharing its expertise in renewable energy, aligning with Africa’s goals for energy transition and sustainability. The Brazil Africa Forum in São Paulo underscored Brazil’s diverse energy mix, which includes hydropower, wind, solar, and biomass, and how this knowledge can support Africa’s shift to cleaner energy sources.
Strengthening South-South Cooperation in Energy
Brazil’s active engagement with African nations through G20 frameworks and bilateral agreements is fostering meaningful South-South cooperation. This collaboration is not only expanding Africa’s energy infrastructure but also driving global sustainability efforts.
• Joint initiatives, such as the partnership between Petrobras, NEC, AEC, and the Brazilian Institute of Petroleum, aim to strengthen oil and gas investments between Brazil and Africa.
• Brazil’s deepwater exploration expertise is expected to enhance Africa’s offshore energy projects, boosting economic growth and energy security.

African Energy Week 2025: Driving Brazil-Africa Energy Collaboration
The “Invest in African Energies” reception set the stage for African Energy Week 2025 (AEW 2025) in Cape Town, a key platform for advancing Brazil-Africa energy partnerships. The conference will bring together industry leaders, policymakers, and investors to explore new oil and gas opportunities, expand renewable energy investments, and facilitate strategic deals.
With Petrobras and independent Brazilian producers increasing their African investments, AEW 2025 is expected to accelerate technology transfer, capital inflows, and sustainable energy development. These strengthening tiesunderscore Brazil’s role as a vital energy partner in Africa, contributing to economic growth, energy security, and regional development.
