The global electric vehicle (EV) market is undergoing a transformation, and Mozambique’s graphite is at the heart of it.
From 2026, graphite extracted from the Balama mine in northern Mozambique by Australian mining firm Syrah Resources will be used in Lucid’s cutting-edge EV batteries. This milestone highlights Mozambique’s strategic role in the supply chain for critical minerals essential to the energy transition.
Syrah’s latest agreement involves supplying 7,000 tonnes of natural graphite active anode material (AAM) over three years to Lucid, a Nasdaq-listed company known for developing some of the world’s most advanced EVs. The deal will be executed through Syrah’s Vidalia facility in Louisiana, which processes Mozambican graphite into battery-ready material.
Mozambique’s Graphite: A Key Pillar in the EV Supply Chain
Lucid, based in Silicon Valley, is rapidly gaining ground in the EV sector. Its flagship model, the Lucid Air, along with the upcoming Lucid Gravity SUV, relies on high-performance batteries that demand a secure and high-quality graphite supply. Syrah’s Vidalia plant plays a crucial role in providing this material, marking one of the few fully integrated graphite supply chains outside China.

The Balama mine in Mozambique is one of the world’s largest high-grade graphite deposits. Its integration with the Vidalia plant creates a strategic supply route for the U.S. battery industry, reducing dependency on traditional supply chains dominated by China. Syrah highlights this vertical integration as a unique value proposition for governments and battery industry stakeholders.

U.S. Government Backing and Market Expansion
Syrah’s operations received a financial boost from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), which approved a $150 million loan to support Balama’s expansion. In November, the company accessed an initial $53 million disbursement. This funding underscores the strategic importance of securing graphite supplies to meet growing EV demand.
However, challenges persist. Operations at Balama have faced disruptions due to protests, leading to temporary halts in production. Syrah continues to engage with DFC and the U.S. Department of Energy to resolve these issues and ensure stability in supply.
Mozambique’s Surging Graphite Production
Graphite production in Mozambique is set to skyrocket, with government estimates projecting over 329,040 tonnes in 2024. This represents an increase of more than 180% compared to recent years, underscoring the country’s growing role in the global energy transition. Production volumes had fluctuated in previous years, reaching 120,000 tonnes in 2020 before dipping to 77,116 tonnes in 2021. The resurgence signals renewed investor confidence and expanding market opportunities.
Syrah’s investment in battery material production strengthens Mozambique’s position in the critical minerals market. As global demand for EVs accelerates, securing stable and sustainable graphite supplies becomes a priority for manufacturers and policymakers alike.
