Zimbabwe has officially applied to join BRICS, a prominent consortium of emerging economies comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

The announcement was made by Zimbabwe’s Foreign Minister, Amon Murwira, during his visit to Moscow, signalling the country’s ambitions to strengthen its global economic and diplomatic standing.

BRICS Expansion: Africa’s Growing Influence

BRICS has been actively expanding its membership to include more emerging markets and deepen economic cooperation. At last year’s BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, Egypt and Ethiopia were inducted as full members. The expansion also included Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), underlining the bloc’s influence and its strategic pivot towards Africa and the Middle East.

In January 2025, Brazil, which currently holds the BRICS presidency, announced Nigeria’s inclusion as a “partner country.” The Brazilian Foreign Ministry emphasized Nigeria’s demographic and economic significance, stating, “As the 6th largest population in the world and the 1st on the African continent, Nigeria has converging interests with the other members of the group.”

Zimbabwe’s application is a continuation of this trend, highlighting the growing importance of African nations in the BRICS strategy. The continent’s potential to contribute to global economic growth and geopolitical stability is increasingly being recognized by major global players.

What BRICS Membership Could Mean for Zimbabwe

For Zimbabwe, joining BRICS could open the door to numerous economic opportunities, including access to new markets, increased trade and investment flows, and participation in collaborative projects. The move is expected to:

• Boost Economic Growth: By integrating with BRICS economies, Zimbabwe could attract foreign direct investment (FDI) and tap into funding for infrastructure and development projects.

• Enhance Trade Opportunities: BRICS membership could facilitate easier trade agreements, reduce barriers, and promote exports of Zimbabwean products to larger markets like China and India.

• Strengthen Diplomatic Relations: Aligning with BRICS could enhance Zimbabwe’s geopolitical clout, providing a platform to influence global economic and political discussions.

The potential access to BRICS’s New Development Bank (NDB) is another significant advantage. The NDB offers financing for infrastructure and sustainable development projects, which could support Zimbabwe’s economic revitalization initiatives.

A Strategic Move Amid Economic Challenges

Zimbabwe’s economy has faced significant hurdles, including hyperinflation, currency instability, and international sanctions. By joining BRICS, Zimbabwe could reduce its dependence on Western financial institutions and gain more diversified support for its economic reforms.

The country’s leaders are optimistic that BRICS membership will help stabilize the economy, create jobs, and foster technological and knowledge transfer. The collaboration with established BRICS nations could also provide Zimbabwe with a blueprint for navigating economic challenges and implementing successful development strategies.

BRICS’s expansion strategy aligns with broader initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), aimed at enhancing intra-African trade and integration. By including more African nations, BRICS is not only promoting regional economic development but also building a counterbalance to Western-dominated financial institutions and trade alliances.

 Zimbabwe’s Path to BRICS Membership

Zimbabwe’s application is under consideration, and while the timeline for the approval process remains uncertain, the nation’s leadership remains hopeful. The outcome will depend on consensus among existing BRICS members and alignment with the consortium’s strategic objectives.

For Zimbabwe, the potential membership in BRICS is not just about economic gain but also about cementing its place on the global stage as a proactive player in international diplomacy and development. The move could signal a new chapter of prosperity and stability, leveraging international partnerships to drive growth and enhance the quality of life for its citizens.

As BRICS continues to evolve, the inclusion of Zimbabwe would contribute to the bloc’s diversity and strength, furthering its mission to create a more balanced and inclusive global economic order.
