Eni has received the green light from the Government of Mozambique to proceed with the development of Coral Norte, the company’s second floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) platform in the gas-rich Rovuma Basin.
This approval paves the way for a final investment decision (FID), according to a report by Reuters on Wednesday.
The development plan for Coral Norte targets the production of 3.55 million tonnes per year (tpy) of LNG over a 30-year period from offshore Area 4 in northern Mozambique.
“This is a significant milestone in Mozambique’s path to becoming a global LNG hub, reinforcing the country’s strategic role in supplying reliable energy to global markets,” said Claudio Descalzi, Coral Norte project director and CEO of Eni.
Coral Norte: Strengthening Mozambique’s LNG Ambitions
Coral Norte is set to complement Coral Sul, Mozambique’s first FLNG platform, which began exporting gas to Europein 2022. Operated by Eni, Coral Sul FLNG is not only Africa’s first deepwater FLNG facility but also the second-largest of its kind globally, boasting a nameplate capacity of 3.5 million tonnes per year.

The addition of Coral Norte is poised to:
• Boost Mozambique’s LNG output
• Enhance supply security for global markets
• Solidify Mozambique’s status as a major LNG producer
• Attract further investment into the country’s burgeoning energy sector
The Coral Norte project builds on Mozambique’s broader ambition to become a key player in the global energy transition, offering a reliable and cleaner energy source at a time when the world is seeking to diversify supply chains and lower carbon emissions.
Mozambique’s Rising Profile in the Global LNG Market
Mozambique’s strategic position and abundant offshore gas reserves make it a critical player in the future of global energy. With Coral Sul already operational and Coral Norte now moving towards final investment approval, the country is fast emerging as an LNG powerhouse.
The expansion of Mozambique’s LNG infrastructure is expected to:
• Create new jobs and spur economic growth
• Increase government revenues through energy exports
• Strengthen regional energy security
• Position Mozambique as a reliable supplier to Europe and Asia
These developments also align with Mozambique’s broader efforts to unlock the potential of its natural resources while fostering sustainable growth and energy diversification.
