Ethiopia is stepping up its commitment to expand access to both continental and international markets as part of a broader strategy to strengthen its export base, particularly in the manufacturing sector.
The Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration recently reaffirmed this focus during the third edition of the Ethiopian Tamirt (Made in Ethiopia) Expo, held in Addis Ababa.
Centred on the theme “Expanding International Export Market Options for the Manufacturing Industry and Joining International Trade Systems,” a high-level panel discussion underscored the country’s intention to diversify export destinations and better integrate with global trade mechanisms.

The Ministry highlighted that unlocking international markets is critical to achieving Ethiopia’s long-term vision for industrialisation. By enhancing its engagement in frameworks such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and leveraging bilateral partnerships, Ethiopia seeks to transition from a raw material exporter to a hub of value-added manufacturing.
Since launching the “Made in Ethiopia” initiative, the government has prioritised reforms aimed at improving the ease of doing business, strengthening export standards, and attracting foreign investment. These measures include streamlining customs procedures, supporting SMEs with export readiness programmes, and promoting Ethiopia’s manufacturing strengths in textiles, agro-processing, leather, and pharmaceuticals.
