The Government of Mozambique, in partnership with the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI), recently hosted a high-level session in London to present the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydropower Project (MNK) — a US$5 billion renewable energy undertaking with 1,500 MW of installed capacity, set to become one of the largest and most competitive power projects in Africa.

Held under the framework of Mozambique’s National Energy Compact and the “Mission 300” initiative, the event brought together senior representatives from the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), MIGA, and the African Development Bank (AfDB) — all key development partners in the project — alongside the strategic investor consortium led by Électricité de France (EDF), with participation from TotalEnergies and Sumitomo Corporation.

Structured under a BOOT (Build, Own, Operate and Transfer) model, MNK represents Mozambique’s largest public-private infrastructure investment to date and is a cornerstone of the country’s strategy to become a regional exporter of clean energy and an industrial hub.

“Mozambique is firmly committed to becoming a regional energy hub, contributing to inclusive growth, climate resilience, and green industrialisation across Southern Africa,” stated Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, H.E. Estevão Pale. “Our national energy strategy is based on expanding access, diversifying generation, fostering green industrialisation, and accelerating the transition to low-carbon sources — with hydropower playing a central role.”

“Mphanda Nkuwa is a national and regional priority — a clean energy project that will define the next chapter of Mozambique’s economic integration and climate resilience,” he added.

Financial close is projected for 2027, with commercial operations expected to begin in 2032. Once operational, MNK will significantly expand regional power supply, boost national electrification, and support long-term industrial growth in Mozambique and Southern Africa.
