Botswana has taken a decisive step towards rebalancing its economy with the launch of the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP). Announced by President Duma Boko in Gaborone, the initiative is designed to broaden the country’s economic base, reduce its reliance on diamond exports, and build a more resilient economic future.
Speaking at the launch, President Boko described the BETP as a framework for repositioning Botswana within a more globally integrated and diversified economic structure. “This programme is about addressing our structural economic challenges, encouraging greater investment, and supporting sectors beyond mining to ensure our economy is fit for purpose in the twenty-first century,” he said.

Botswana’s economy has long been celebrated for its political stability, legal transparency, and sound governance, but its heavy dependence on diamonds — which make up the bulk of export earnings — leaves it vulnerable to global price swings. The BETP seeks to tackle this by unlocking the potential of other industries, including manufacturing, agriculture, tourism, and financial services.
According to the President, the programme is fully aligned with the country’s broader development goals, such as Vision 2036, and aims to foster an environment that attracts both domestic and international investors. By leveraging Botswana’s strong institutional foundations, the BETP aspires to channel capital inflows and drive sustainable growth.
Crucially, the BETP also promises to advance public sector reforms, ensuring that policy and governance frameworks keep pace with the demands of a modern, competitive economy.
