The African Development Fund approved a €2.5 million grant (1.7 billion CFA francs, worth $2.8 million USD), to launch the AfCFTA WAEMU Accelerator. This targets small and medium-sized enterprises across eight West African states. Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo will benefit.
The initiative strengthens private sector competitiveness. It links the 147 million-person region to the African Continental Free Trade Area. AfCFTA entered its operational phase in May 2021.
Institutional Harmonisation Builds Foundations
National consultations will assess AfCFTA progress in each country. Officials will check real-world status, not just reports. A regional workshop follows. It creates an accountability framework.
This aligns national strategies. It reduces non-tariff barriers like inconsistent rules and customs delays. Dr. Lamin Barrow, former African Development Bank Group Regional Director for West Africa Region 1, said the project harmonises efforts. It leverages synergies for sub-regional integration.

Operational Support Equips 100 Export-Ready SMEs
One hundred SMEs get direct aid. Many are women- and youth-led. Training covers export procedures, finance access, compliance, new technologies and sustainable practices.
The WAEMU Regional Chamber of Commerce gains strength too. It acts as the private sector’s voice in integration.
SMEs account for over 80% of jobs in Africa. They need this to tap AfCFTA’s 1.5 billion consumers and $3.4 trillion GDP.
Investors eye scalable chances in trade plumbing. The African Development Bank Group invested $55 billion in connectivity over the past decade. Recent moves include a $1.3 billion East Africa pipeline and $696 million Central Corridor guarantee.
A trilateral pact with AfCFTA Secretariat and Africa50 boosts infrastructure.
