The 33 kV line, inaugurated on Tuesday in Nhambalale, will serve the communities of Chacocoma, Chirodzi N’sanangué and Nhambalale, providing around 4,345 people with access to electricity in its initial phase.
The infrastructure forms part of the Mphanda Nkuwa Social Development Plan (PDS) and EDM’s ProEnergia programme, following a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two institutions in September 2025.
Beyond household electrification, the investment is expected to support local economic activity by improving access to reliable power for small businesses and other community-based initiatives.
The programme is also being extended to Cahora Bassa District, where Maroeira-Nhandoa and Calibote are expected to benefit from an additional 19 kilometres of electricity infrastructure.
Overall, the electrification programme provides for 46 kilometres of medium-voltage lines, 18 kilometres of low-voltage networks and 12 transformers with a capacity of 75 kVA each. Once completed, the infrastructure has the potential to connect more than 780 families.
Energy is one of five priority areas under the Mphanda Nkuwa Social Development Plan, alongside water, education, health and agriculture and livestock. The programme brings together GMNK, EDM, local authorities and communities to support social and economic development in areas associated with the hydropower project.
The inauguration ceremony was led by Tete Province Secretary of State Cristina Mafumo and attended by local authorities, representatives of GMNK and EDM, community leaders and residents of the beneficiary communities.
The electrification initiative adds a local development dimension to Mphanda Nkuwa, one of Mozambique’s largest planned energy infrastructure projects, as preparations for the hydropower development continue alongside investment in communities in its area of influence.
