A Tanzania gas discovery of 223 billion cubic feet in Mtwara’s Mnazi Bay Block strengthens near-term domestic supply and opens new opportunities for power and infrastructure investors.

A new supply source for Tanzania

Energy Minister Juma Zuberi Homera announced the discovery on 27 October 2026. The find came from the Kasa-1X ST2 exploration well in the Mnazi Bay Block.

The Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation drilled the well with France’s Maurel & Prom. It marks Tanzania’s first reported gas discovery in more than a decade.

The Kasa-1X ST2 well should produce about 30 million cubic feet daily for at least 10 years, the minister said. Maurel & Prom separately said first production could begin as early as November 2026.

The announcement follows work on three Mnazi Bay wells. They include Kasa-1X ST2, MB-5 and MS-2. MB-5 and MS-2 have lifted field output by about 65 million cubic feet daily, according to the company’s 2026 update.

Maurel & Prom said its working-interest production averaged 67 million cubic feet daily during the first nine months of 2026. The figure rose 12% from the same period in 2025.

The company also said total field production reached about 130 million cubic feet daily. Its working-interest share stood at 78 million cubic feet daily.

By FurtherAfrica’s reading of the numbers, the discovery adds supply depth rather than replacing existing production. That distinction matters for Tanzania’s industrial planning.

What does the discovery mean for investors?

More than 80% of Mnazi Bay gas supplies electricity generation at Tanzania Electric Supply Company plants in Mtwara and Dar es Salaam, according to the announcement. That use gives the discovery an immediate domestic market.

It also supports Tanzania’s effort to limit exposure to imported energy while expanding power availability. The key investment signal is straightforward: Tanzania is adding domestic gas while existing Mnazi Bay wells expand output.

For investors, the first opportunity sits upstream. Drilling, field services and processing equipment should benefit as operators prepare the new well for production.

Power generation offers a second channel. More reliable gas supply can support new generation capacity and improve utilisation at existing plants.

Infrastructure could gain as well. Processing facilities, gathering systems and pipelines will determine how efficiently producers move gas to power plants and industrial users.

The discovery also improves the commercial case for gas-intensive industries in southern Tanzania. However, project returns will depend on gas pricing, plant reliability and the timing of connection infrastructure.

Maurel & Prom’s figures point to a rapid production timetable. The company envisaged first output from Kasa-1X as early as November 2026, with gross production potential of 50 million cubic feet daily.

The different production estimates reflect different reporting bases. The minister cited about 30 million cubic feet daily for the well, while Maurel & Prom reported gross field potential.

This find also sits within a broader East African energy story. The AfDB’s US$3.85B Tanzania portfolio reviewed in Dar es Salaam earlier in October signals sustained multilateral appetite for Tanzanian energy and infrastructure projects. Regional gas momentum is also visible in Angola, where the Benguela gas field confirmed 41M scf/d at Katambi-2, illustrating how Africa’s gas frontier is advancing on multiple fronts simultaneously.

The discovery strengthens Tanzania’s energy outlook, but execution will shape its wider economic value. Investors should watch first gas, processing capacity and new power demand through 2027.

Quick answers
How large is the Tanzania gas discovery in Mtwara?

The discovery totals 223 billion cubic feet and was made at the Kasa-1X ST2 exploration well in the Mnazi Bay Block, announced on 27 October 2026.

Who drilled the Kasa-1X ST2 well in Tanzania?

The Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation drilled the well in partnership with French operator Maurel & Prom, marking Tanzania’s first reported gas discovery in more than a decade.

When could first gas production begin from Kasa-1X ST2?

Maurel & Prom said first production could begin as early as November 2026, with gross field potential of around 50 million cubic feet per day from the well.
