Tomas Imparato

Tomas is a Brazilian-Italian national who grew up around Africa, both in Mozambique and Ghana. He is currently a senior at Columbia University, completing a dual bachelor’s program between Columbia and the Paris Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po) in which he studied anthropology, political theory, and international relations. Concerned with established attitudes and practices of international development, his Sciences Po dissertation dealt with beneficiary participation in South-South development schemes. Tomas’ career has so far included experiences such as working as a journalist for the Columbia Daily Spectator, covering crime and transportation in the city of New York, and analysis for the implementation of participative development strategies as an intern at AVSI, an Italian development NGO. In the summer of 2022, he will participate in a fellowship in War Studies with the Institute for the Study of War to research the evolving nature of modern warfare. He hopes to continue to engage with the interconnected issues of international development, peace, and conflict in the Global South through a journalistic lens in future academic and professional activities. Tomas can be reached at td2686@columbia.edu
