The Coral Sul project, developed in Area 4 of the Rovuma Basin in Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, has achieved a significant milestone, further cementing its reputation in the global energy market.
On Saturday, 5 April, the floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) platform completed the loading of its 100th LNG vessel, marking a major success for the country’s burgeoning gas sector.
This achievement comes as the consortium, led by Eni, continues discussions with the Mozambican government regarding the introduction of a second floating platform, signalling confidence in Mozambique’s long-term LNG potential.
A Reliable Source of Clean Energy
Anchored in the ultra-deep waters of the Rovuma Basin, the Coral Sul FLNG platform has been exporting LNG weeklysince operations began in November 2022. According to a statement released by Mozambique’s National Petroleum Institute (INP), all 100 shipments have been delivered to the international market, reinforcing Mozambique’s position as a reliable and clean energy alternative on the global stage.
The consistent operation of Coral Sul highlights the project’s operational excellence and global market relevance at a time when countries around the world are seeking to diversify their energy sources and reduce carbon emissions.
Discussions Underway for Expansion
The milestone coincides with ongoing negotiations between the government and the Area 4 consortium to launch a second FLNG platform. Expanding capacity would not only consolidate Mozambique’s role as a major LNG exporter but also enhance its contribution to global energy security.
The Coral Sul FLNG facility is a flagship project for Mozambique, demonstrating the country’s ability to deliver complex energy projects despite the challenges posed by operating in deepwater environments.
