The Africa Agri Tech Conference 2025, held at the CSIR Convention Centre in Pretoria from 18 to 20 March, kicked off with a strong focus on how technology can transform agricultural productivity and sustainability.
The conference, bringing together industry experts, policymakers, and agribusiness leaders, underscored the critical role of digitalisation, artificial intelligence (AI), and data analytics in shaping the future of Africa’s agricultural sector.
The Future of Agriculture: Innovation and Climate Resilience
Opening the conference, Tshwane Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya emphasised the city’s vision of becoming an agro-processing hub that not only enhances food security but also contributes significantly to economic growth and job creation.
Climate change and global trade shifts were identified as key risks threatening Africa’s agricultural sector. Andries Wiese, National Business Development Manager at Hollard Insurance, highlighted the urgency of using technology to mitigate climate risks and improve resilience.
Challenging Carbon Footprint Assumptions

One of the most groundbreaking discussions came from Prof. James Blignaut of Stellenbosch University and the South African Environmental Observation Network. He challenged traditional carbon calculation models that previously exaggerated the environmental impact of livestock farming.
He noted that previous models did not account for the natural carbon absorption cycle, misrepresenting the impact of meat and wool production in comparison to petroleum-based fibres. New research reveals that 54% of carbon from livestock manure is reabsorbed into the soil, and methane emissions dissipate far quicker than originally estimated.
This revised carbon model offers a more accurate perspective on sustainability, paving the way for more informed policy and investment decisions in sustainable agriculture.
AI and Data: Unlocking New Efficiencies in Agriculture
With digitalisation at the forefront, industry leaders stressed the importance of practical, data-driven solutions that enhance farming efficiency.
• Tom Westphal, Executive Director of the South African Meat Industry Company, urged a simplified approach to technology, stating that software should solve real agricultural challenges rather than add complexity.
• Basson Engelbrecht, CEO of Reisiger Ventures, emphasised that data has evolved from simple record-keeping to predictive analytics, enabling farmers to make proactive decisions that drive profitability.
Artificial Intelligence in Farming: A Game-Changer

AI is rapidly reshaping agriculture, and Brett StClair, ‘The Rebel Technologist’, described it as an opportunity rather than a threat. He highlighted AI’s ability to amplify human intelligence, improving decision-making, efficiency, and sustainability.
Microsoft South Africa’s Principal Data and AI Specialist, Riedwaan Bassadien, showcased how generative AI can revolutionise farming:

✔ Planning for future increases in feed costs
✔ Maximising crop yields based on real-time weather and soil conditions
“We have been collecting agricultural data for years; now, we must turn insights into action,” Bassadien noted. AI-powered data analytics will allow farmers to stay ahead of risks and improve productivity, making agribusinesses more competitive and resilient.
