Ethiopian Airlines has signed a landmark agreement with Archer Aviation, paving the way for the deployment of an electric air taxi network across Ethiopia and the wider African region.
The deal marks a significant step towards integrating advanced air mobility (AAM) technologies into Africa’s aviation ecosystem.
Under the agreement, Africa’s largest airline will acquire a fleet of Midnight aircraft as part of Archer’s Launch Edition programme, which is valued at up to US$30 million. These electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft are designed to perform short-range, low-noise, and sustainable flights, offering a viable alternative to traditional urban commutes.
Archer’s Midnight aircraft is a piloted, four-passenger vehicle capable of executing back-to-back flights with minimal charge time. The technology aims to replace 60–90-minute car journeys with swift 10–20-minute air taxi flights.
Ethiopian Airlines CEO Mesfin Tasew highlighted the airline’s ambition to lead innovation in the region:

As part of the rollout, Archer will provide Ethiopian Airlines with pilots, technicians, engineers, and essential software infrastructure, including booking platforms.
The partnership will also engage with the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority to ensure regulatory compliance and safety standards are met, with the ultimate goal of building a scalable and secure air taxi network.
Archer Aviation CEO Adam Goldstein emphasised Africa’s untapped potential:

In addition to urban commuting, the partnership aims to explore use cases in eco-tourism and regional travel, aligning with Ethiopia’s broader sustainability goals.
