South Africa is stepping up its bid to become a leading global destination for international film shoots and large-scale events with the introduction of two innovative digital visas.

Unveiled by Minister Leon Schreiber during the Home Affairs budget vote in Parliament, the new visa schemes — named STAGES and MEETS — are designed to remove bureaucratic barriers and unlock fresh economic opportunities for South Africa’s creative and events sectors.

The STAGES Visa will specifically target the booming global film and television industry, positioning South Africa as an attractive alternative to traditional filming hubs. By simplifying visa processes for international production crews and talent, the government aims to attract more big-budget productions, generating local jobs and boosting revenue across hospitality, transport and tourism.

The MEETS Visa, meanwhile, will focus on drawing high-profile international conferences, exhibitions, and mega-events to the country. By offering a streamlined application process for event organisers and their teams, the visa is expected to stimulate the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) sector and help South Africa compete with other major event destinations.

Business leaders and creative industry stakeholders have long called for more practical visa policies to unlock South Africa’s full potential as a world-class filming and events location. The Department of Home Affairs says these new visas reflect a commitment to growth-friendly reforms that remove red tape and attract billions in investment.

With the global film and events industry valued at hundreds of billions of dollars, STAGES and MEETS could deliver a significant boost to South Africa’s economy — creating jobs, diversifying tourism, and reinforcing the country’s reputation as a creative hub.
