Ethiopia is taking bold steps toward a green economy by accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), a move designed to combat climate change and reduce dependence on fuel imports.
At a high-level meeting in Addis Ababa, stakeholders officially approved the Electric Vehicles Implementation Strategy, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transition to sustainable transportation.
Transport Sector’s Role in Green Growth
Speaking at the event, Transport and Logistics Minister Alemu Sime underscored the crucial role of the transport sector in achieving environmental sustainability. He highlighted Ethiopia’s heavy reliance on fuel, with the country spending a staggering $4 billion annually on fuel imports. Transitioning to renewable energy-powered transport will not only cut air pollution but also free up financial resources for essential infrastructure projects.
Key Components of the Strategy

The new strategy outlines several transformative measures to accelerate EV adoption:
• Phasing out fuel-powered vehicles – The importation of used fuel-powered cars will be gradually banned.
• Encouraging EV imports – The government will facilitate and incentivize the importation of electric vehicles.
• Retrofitting existing fuel cars – A conversion program will be introduced to modify traditional fuel-powered cars into EVs.
• Expanding EV infrastructure – Charging stations will be strategically installed nationwide to support the growing EV ecosystem.
